Galapagos Endemic Species Recovery Park
imageThe Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) and The Galapagos National Park have done an exemplary job repatriating nearly extinct species of giant tortoises. They have had many successes eradicating invasive species of goats, rats and cats, but have had very limited successes with plant species. On the four inhabited islands endemic or native plant species make up less than three percent of the plant mass. Agriculture occupies approximately two percent. That means that ninety-five percent of the plant masses on those islands are composed of introduced invasive plant species.

The most aggressive of these are imageblack berry vines, image a large species of lantana, image passion fruit and guava. The lantana and guava trees provide a frame work for the berry and passion fruit vines to intertwine. The tangle they create is thorny and virtually impenetrable. The shade beneath this tangle is complete. These four plants produce a huge amount of seeds so that the soil beneath this tangle is inundated with these seeds, some of which can survive up to twenty years.
